The joy of kicking through autumn leaves (Letters, 14 November) was outlined by Vita Sackville-West. She used “through leaves” as an adjective to describe simple but rewarding activities, such as cutting paper with sharp scissors, squishing sand between your toes and crunching ice on puddles. Modern versions might include getting a letter published in the Guardian.
