The shopkeeper working up to 22 hours A DAY to make sure his community doesn't go without

A dedicated shopkeeper has been working up to 22 hours a day to make sure his community doesn't go without during the coronavirus lockdown.

Damian Edwards has been running Damian's General Store in Alkrington, Middleton for more than 20 years, and has come to regard his customers as family.

Over the past few weeks, he has been working almost around the clock, both in the shop and making deliveries to customers who can't leave their homes, to make sure everyone has everything they need.

He visits a cash and carry at 5am every day and has even been live streaming what he buys on Facebook, so customers know what he's got in.

The shop is open from 10am to 6pm, and once it closes, he spends the night driving around to drop off deliveries to vulnerable people and customers who are self isolating, until 11pm.

He has refused to increase any of his prices, and has also let another local business owner, who sells bedding plants, sell his stock at the shop as otherwise it would have all died.

Damian, whose dad Trevor is helping him to run the business, didn't get to bed until 3.30am last night, but was back out working again just a few hours later.

Friend Kris Gleave says Damian has gone above and beyond for his community.

He said: "He's recognised the struggles people have getting to the shops and the importance of social distancing and is really going over and above.

"He's opened up taking orders over the phone. Not even just for the elderly but for anyone who can't get in. No delivery charges, no minimum order, nothing.

"He's a rare find and such a lovely man and to give what he's giving at the moment really needs to be recognised".

Damian says he was just keen to make sure none of his loyal customers went without.

He said: "I think a lot of my customers, they are more like family.

"No one has been going without, everyone has got everything."
