The shopkeeper struggling to cope as people steal from him almost every single day

A shopkeeper fears for his livelihood as well as his safety after thieves and thugs have made his life a misery.

Christopher Gnana has been running Family Choice in Hafod, Swansea, for two years.

But almost every day the 38-year-old has to confront shoplifters as well deal with people violent threats.

Mr Gnana, who said he is losing hundreds of pounds, insisted he has tried to ban offenders - but they just keep coming back.

"Every day is a nightmare for us," he said. "I have banned them but they keep coming back in, sometimes they make threats and ask if I want a physical fight and I have to step back and tell them to go, it's intimidating."

Last week, WalesOnline spoke to several residents in the area who say they are also living in fear .

Locals claim that drug dealing takes place openly, doors are tried at night and there is constant shouting and screaming on the streets and prostitutes also hang around by the corner.

CCTV footage from Mr Gnana's shop in Llangyfelach Street appears to show several incidents of shoplifting taking place at the shop.  The footage - seen by WalesOnline - has also been passed onto the police.

He added: "They usually come around 9-10pm, it's the same group of people who I think are in their 40's. They all live in the area and they mostly take alcohol such as beer cans or wine bottles.

"I lose about £70-£80 a week.

"One time I ran out chasing them and one guy threw a bottle at me, luckily it missed.

"I always report it to the police, I just don't know how to stop them.

"Every day when I start work I think to myself what trouble is going to happen today. When I seen them walking towards the shop I have to be alert at all times. I'm on edge. It does worry you."

South Wales Police said it was aware of a number of incidents at the shop.

A spokeswoman said: "We received a report of theft from the shop on October 16 where a man said he was going to leave the shop with a bottle but staff removed it from him before he did. Therefore no crime had occurred.

"We have received a further report today of threats being made to staff and this is being investigated.

"Officers have spoken to manager of the shop and crime prevention advice will be given on how to prevent thefts from the store.

"The city neighbourhood policing team are regularly carrying out patrols in the area and speaking to residents and businesses to help address any issues they may be experiencing."

The force added it regularly held "street surgeries" in the area - a chance for residents to chat face-to-face with officers about their concerns.

The next one will be taking place on May 29.

In the meantime, police said anyone with information about any thefts at the shop should contact them via 101 or Crimestoppers.
