The shocking state of a children's playground in one of Newport's most deprived areas

Parents claim they have spent years asking for action over the poor state of disrepair of a children's play park.

The playground, which is located in the Pillgwenlly area of Newport, has dangerous uneven flooring, locked gates, and a litter problem, according to residents.

Some parents said they fear for their children's safety and claim to have witnessed injuries due to the condition of the park.

The play area is located next to Pill Millennium Centre in Pillgwenlly.

Pillgwenlly resident Stephen Bale, 46, said: "I have two children aged six and eight who use the playground daily.

"All the flooring is uneven. Around the roundabout, the flooring is all damaged and children are always falling over.

"The rubber matting on the floor is lifting and I've seen a child cut their face on the slide after tripping on this matting.

"Underneath the swings, all that flooring is damaged."

And residents said some of the equipment has been locked shut for six years, preventing children from using it.

Stephen continued: "The gates to the whole play area were locked for the entire six weeks holidays.

"But the fact that half of it is still locked six years after they installed the new equipment is a joke."

Newport City Council said that the entire play area is closed despite it being used daily.

A Newport City Council spokesperson said: "The play area is currently closed due to extensive damage to the surfacing.

"We’re liaising with partners on fixing it, but at the moment it is unsafe to open".

The only other playground for Pillgwenlly children is located in Belle Vue Park.

Parents like Stephen are urging Newport City Council to make the necessary improvements so their children can enjoy the playground once again.
