The shocking picture which proves cycle helmets save lives

With its shattered windscreen and damaged bonnet the Ford looks like it's been involved in a major smash.

In fact it had crashed into a cyclist.

The shocking photo has been released by police to highlight how wearing a helmet while riding a bike can save lives.

Police say in this instance the driver was 'completely blameless' and that the cyclist was wearing a helmet, which 'undoubtedly helped to prevent more serious injury'.

Incredibly the cyclist escaped with just a broken arm.

Lancs Road Police tweeted: "If ever there was a scene to promote the wearing of a cycle helmet, this is it.

"Rider of a bicycle and a car have collided on Birkacre Brow, Coppull. Rider off to hospital and road will be open shortly."

After dozens of replies the force later added: "The rider has a broken arm but was wearing a helmet which has undoubtedly helped to prevent more serious injury and the original tweet just sought to highlight their benefits

"This tweet is simply reporting the facts of a collision so you know what we do on a daily basis.

"Whilst we appreciate that this isn't always the case, on this occasion the motorist was COMPLETELY blameless."
