The shocking moment Storm Ciara blows over moving lorry on Severn bridge

Shocking video footage shows the moment a lorry overturned on the old M48 Severn Crossing.

The articulated vehicle blew over onto its side following a "sudden spike" of wind during Storm Ciara at around 11.45am on Monday morning.

CCTV footage filmed from a bridge tower shows the lorry moving towards the English border when it topples over onto its left-hand side, falling dangerously close to the edge of the bridge.

The driver, who had been travelling along the M48 bridge from Chepstow to Avonmouth in Bristol, escaped with only minor head injuries.

The fiancé of the lorry driver, who did not want to be named, said he suffered "two minor fractures to the head" and was left "a bit bruised" - but was at home recovering.

She said: "He just felt the wind pick up and saw the trailer start to tip over so he steered into the middle as much as he could to avoid the edge of the bridge."

She added: "We want to say a massive thank you to all the emergency services that were involved for getting him out so quickly and safely and the wonderful staff at Southmead A&E.

"Especially thanks to the drivers that stopped to help him immediately after it happened."

Motorist David Evans was travelling toward Wales in the opposite direction when the lorry overturned on the opposite carriageway.

He said: "It was extremely windy on the bridge, the lorry was sheltering us, but we could hardly stand up in the wind when I went to get back to my car. I had to be escorted off the bridge because the winds were over 50mph."

Strong winds brought by Storm Ciara over the weekend led to the bridge being closed in both directions on Sunday and early Monday morning.

The bridge was closed entirely until around midday on Tuesday when westbound reopened with restrictions to high-sided vehicles, towing vehicles and motorbikes.
