The shocking moment a woman's car is deliberately set on fire in broad daylight

This is the shocking moment men wearing motorcycle helmets destroyed a £28,000 car by dousing it with petrol and setting it alight in broad daylight.

Nia Devonald's beloved BMW 218 M Sport was attacked in broad daylight at 1.30pm on Monday, August 19 by the duo, who are captured on CCTV smashing the rear window before pouring a petrol canister over the car and setting it alight, before running off.

The car was parked in the driveway of her family home at Trinity Lane, Penclawdd , Swansea .

Her mum, Dawn Devonald said: "It's lucky we were here at the time as we managed to get the flames out, otherwise it could have taken half our house out with it.

"We were just shocked, you don't expect anything like that to happen. We heard a really loud bang and then we went outside and there were flames leaping out of the car.

"We called the fire brigade, we didn't know what to do and whether or not to put water on it as petrol had been poured over it. My husband put it out using a hose pipe in the end.

"When the fire brigade came they did not think it was anything malicious at first due to the time of day. But I said I had CCTV. When I looked at it afterwards I felt sick, we were just shocked."

The 22-year-old bought the BMW brand new, worth £28,000 and she had only had it for nine months.

It is the second time her car was targeted. The family installed CCTV after another incident back in February which saw the windscreen smashed after someone threw a lump of concrete at it.

Discussing the latest incident, her mum added: "It's a total write off. We had to get a recovery vehicle to come and get the car, it was totally burnt out.

"My daughter is a dental therapist hygienist and she has worked very hard after graduating from university. She loved her car, it is her pride and joy.

"It's left us feeling quite vulnerable now, any noise now in the night just makes us feel a bit nervous. You just wonder what is going to happen next.

"My daughter is wondering whether there is any point replacing her car and asking herself will it happen again.

"Police are investigating and we'd ask anyone to contact them if they have any information. I don't understand why my daughter is being picked on, she hasn't done anything to anyone."

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said police were keen to speak to both of the people in the images, issuing descriptions of what they were wearing at the time.

A force statement read: "The first helmet is black with a red Mohawk style red stripe running front to back.

"The person wearing it was wearing a black North face jacket and black shoes with white trim all the way around. The second person we would like to speak to is a left-handed male, who was wearing a white helmet and a black jumper with a large white motif across the front.

"Anyone with information should contact 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence 1900305774."
