The shirt numbers available to Pablo Mari as Arsenal target loan deal with option to buy

Arsenal are set for a busy end to the January transfer window.

The Gunners strengthened their squad in the summer, with Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Dani Ceballos, club record signing Nicolas Pepe, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz all joining.

Unai Emery wasn't able to get the best out of those players and was sacked in November, with former captain Mikel Arteta being appointed as head coach three weeks later.

And it would appear that Spaniard will soon have his first signing in the shape of defender Pablo Mari.

Football.london understands Arsenal are working on a loan deal for the Flamengo centre-back as they look to strengthen in central defence.

The Gunners are looking to bring in Mari on loan with an option to make the deal permanent in the summer.

In addition, Spaniard has flown to London and is expected to hold further talks with the north London this afternoon and is expected to undergo his medical this weekend.

That leaves one question. What shirt number will Mari wear if he completes his loan deal?

Last season he wore the no.4 and no.24 shirt for Flamengo, while he's worn no.22, no.16, no.2, no.5, no.34 and no.32 throughout his career which includes spells in Spain and the Netherlands.

Which of those aforementioned squad numbers would be available to the 26-year-old should he complete his move?

Here we take a look to see what numbers are currently free in north London.

No.4

Handed the No.4 shirt ahead of the 2018/2019, Mohamed Elneny barely featured under Emery and was loaned out to Besiktas in the summer.

No.6

The departure of captain Laurent Koscielny to Bordeaux means that the number 6 shirt is now available to any potential new signings.

No.7

Henrikh Mkhitaryan took over this number from Alexis Sanchez two years ago, but hasn't been at his best with the Gunners and is spending the season with Roma in Italy.

No.12

Stephan Lichtsteiner left Arsenal when his contract expired at the end of last season.

No.13

David Ospina left the club after making the permanent switch to loan club Napoli earlier in the summer.

No.17

Made vacant following Alex Iwobi's big money move to Everton in the summer.

No.18

One of two shirt numbers Nacho Monreal had at the Emirates, but he departed for Real Sociedad in the summer with the Gunners well-stocked for options at left-back.

No.22

Arsenal opted against signing Denis Suarez on a permanent deal this summer after a disastrous loan spell in north London.

No.25

It was finally the summer when Carl Jenkinson departed after plenty of exit talk over the past few seasons.

He sealed a move to Championship side Nottingham Forest, but missed the chance of a swift reunion as injury ruled him out of the Carabao Cup meeting between the two teams earlier in the campaign.
