The shirt number Gedson Fernandes could wear after completing Tottenham transfer

Gedson Fernandes looks set to be Jose Mourinho's first signing as Tottenham boss.

The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder is in London for a medical with Spurs ahead of an 18-month loan move from Benfica.

The loan deal will have an option to buy at the end of it, with the Portuguese side demanding a fee in the region of £47milion next summer for his permanent transfer.

Spurs have injury concerns in the middle of the park, with Moussa Sissoko out until April after sustaining a media collateral ligament injury in his knee.

Tanguy Ndombele is also out of action at the moment with a hip injury, leaving Mourinho short of options in the two in front of the defence.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool: Jose Mourinho post match press conference

Fernandes is a versatile midfielder who plays mainly in the centre, but he can also play on the right and left, as well as on the odd occasion as an attacking midfielder or second striker.

With Fernandes in London completing a medical, it looks like being a matter of when, rather than if his signing is announced, although Mourinho remaing tight-lipped on his arrival.

Speaking during his press conference ahead of the FA Cup third round replay against Middlesbrough, Mourinho said: "I am waiting for news. News can come or not. I'm more worried about Middlesbrough than the market. Even if you get a player you cannot play him in a replay."

But when he does sign terms on his 18-month loan deal, what shirt number will he be given?

There are a few vacant numbers open to him, although one really stands out.

Since Kieran Trippier left the club there has not been a number 2 at Spurs, although that is usually reserved for a right-back and would be an unlikely choice for Fernandes.

Clint Dempsey, an attacking midfielder, did, however wear the number 2 during his Spurs playing days.

Vincent Janssen also vacated the number 9 shirt when he left for Mexican side Monterrey, but that is a number more common for strikers, so Fernandes would be unlikely to take that number.

The next number available in the Spurs squad is the number 14 - last worn by Georges-Kevin Nkoudou.

It is a number that was previously made famous by midfield maestros Luka Modric, Gus Poyet and David Ginola though and would seemingly be the perfect choice for Fernandes.

Other shirts numbers available currently are 25, 26 and 29.
