The Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead is leaking - but hopefully not for long

Roof repairs are planned for a renowned Gateshead art gallery two years after its centenary.

Plans are afoot to patch up the Shipley Art Gallery's roof after "various" leaks have been reported around the building.

In a planning application, council officer Stephen Coldpitts said that a full survey was carried out to identify the repairs needed.

"There have been various leaks reported within the Shipley Art Gallery. A full survey of the roof and pointing to stone work has been carried out," he wrote.

"The proposed repair work will include roof tile replacement and pointing works."

Mr Coldpitts added that any new slates will match the existing type and size of ones already on the roof.

Gateshead Council will decide whether to give consent for the plans by 8th August.

In 1917, Gateshead opened its first art gallery, after local solicitor Joseph Shipley left the borough cash and paintings.

The gallery, which his bequest paid for after his death in 1909, started life with 504 of his works of art, which included a group of outstanding Dutch and Flemish 16th and 17th century paintings.
