'The shelves are far too high'... elderly couple using stick to reach cupboards as saga of new kitchen drags on

An elderly couple from south Manchester have said they have to use a stick to reach their cupboards after their new kitchen was fitted without considering their needs.

William and Patricia Waldren from Longsight had a new kitchen installed last year and while it all seemed like it would make things easier for them, they soon realised that they couldn't use it properly.

Both William and Patricia have limited mobility, meaning the layout of the kitchen has made it difficult for them to use.

"The shelves are far too high for us to reach," William, 78, tells the Manchester Evening News .

"I can't move much at all, my wife has to use a stick to help us get food from the cupboards.

"I tried telling them whilst they were installing it that it wasn't suitable for us but they just wouldn't listen."

The couple had their kitchen installed eight months ago by a contractor working on behalf of Irwell Valley, the couple's housing association.

But they say they have now spent the last six months asking for help.

"We have complained about the kitchen time and time again but I feel like they just aren't listening to us," William says.

"Every time we complain, someone else says it needs to be reassessed and we have to book a new appointment."

Five years ago, William was involved in a horrific incident where the mobility scooter he was in was crushed by a vehicle.

He says he has been waiting for a knee replacement since then and hasn't been able to have an operation due to his health.

Meanwhile, Patricia, 67, has recently had a hip operation and cannot bend down properly.

"This has been very stressful for the both of us," adds William.

"They're keeping us waiting all this time, it's not on."

A spokesperson for the housing association said they were working with the couple to find a solution to their problems.

“Before we carry out any improvement work we visit every customer to go through the design and process with them," the spokesperson for Irwell Valley said.

"If they have any additional needs, we engage with Occupational Therapists from the relevant social services team and follow any professional recommendations.

"We understand that since the installation, the customer has had some difficulties and we are working with partners to make the necessary alterations.”
