The Shawshank Redemption named as the nation’s favourite ‘desert island film’

More people than ever are looking to movies to transport them during these strange times, and now the nation’s favourite "desert island films" have been revealed.

SpareRoom has been busy asking Britons the eight films they would take with them if they were cast away.

The results are interesting – as well as some stone cold classics, there are a few surprises in there, including one of Richard Curtis’s lesser known romcoms.

The films are: The Shawshank Redemption, Pretty Woman, Dirty Dancing, Pulp Fiction, Titanic, About Time, Gladiator and the Matrix.

Nearly 4,000 flatsharers took part in the survey, with 90s hit the Shawshank Redemption topping the list.

As well as being one of our favourite Stephen King adaptations, the Shawshank Redemption has become one of the most critically acclaimed films of all time, despite flopping at the box office when it was first released in 1994.

More than half (56 per cent) of people surveyed also revealed they had either watched or re-watched their favourite movie during lockdown.

Matt Hutchinson, SpareRoom director said: “Films are a great way to immerse yourself in another world, which is most likely something people crave more than ever when they’re limited to the same space for most of the week. We’re now deep into lockdown, and according to the survey, most of us have either watched our favourite films already, or plan on doing so."
