The seven North East postcodes where Covid cases could be down to zero

Covid-19 is currently "suppressed" in seven parts of the North East, as infection rates continue to plummet around the region.

New Government data has revealed rock bottom rates in postcodes located in Newcastle, County Durham and both North and South Tyneside.

Yesterday, ChronicleLive revealed how there just a handful of cases last week in Jarrow and neighbouring Simonside.

Infections there are down by around 90 per cent since the start of the third national lockdown.

A local councillor believes that is partially down to locals 'doing the basics right', such as hand washing and social distancing

Now several more areas have recorded cases low enough that the Government considers the virus suppressed.

That means there were less than three cases there - and potentially none - in the past seven days.

When levels are that low, the Government doesn't disclose the number of cases for fear of identifying those infected.

And based on current trajectories, there are several more postcodes which could join them in the coming days.

They include South Jesmond and Sandyford, where there have been three cases in the past week - leaving the area with an infection rate of 33.4 per every 100,000 people.

In County Durham, there were also three cases in Sedgefield and Bishop Middleham (43.8).

Cases fell by at least 17 per cent in every LA7 council area last week, as the impact of the latest lockdown takes hold.

Those restrictions are set to be reviewed in the coming days, with Boris Johnson expected to announce the country's roadmap out of lockdown during the week of February 22.

The North East areas where the virus is currently suppressed are:

* Simonside (South Tyneside)

* Walker South (Newcastle)

* Battle Hill West (North Tyneside)

* West Boldon (South Tyneside)

* Coundon North (County Durham)

* Newton Aycliffe West (County Durham)

* Upper Teesdale (County Durham)
