The seven areas of Wales where Covid infections are over 1,000

Three areas of Cardiff have some of the highest rates of Covid in Wales.

There are seven area of Wales that have more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 of population with three in the Welsh captial and four in the rural county of Gwynedd.

This comes as Wales sees an overall rise in the infection rate for the seventh day in a row as the figure for the whole of Wales reaches nearly 500.

In the Welsh capital the three areas with the highest rates (and the third, fourth and fifth highest in the whole of Wales) are Radyr, Morganstown & Gwaelod-y-garth (12045 cases per 100,000), Ely West (1,072) and Rhiwbina Village (1,059).

In Gwynedd, which for so long had relatively low rates of the virus compared to other areas of North Wales, the two highest areas in Wales are located.

  • Caernarfon East - 1,570.90
  • Bala & Mawddwy - 1,315.80
  • Blaenau Ffestiniog & Trawsfynydd - 1,047.60
  • Bethel & Llanrug - 1,006.30

Three other areas of Cardiff are in the top 20 highest places for infection rate in Wales. These are Heath, Llanrumney North and Ely East.

Just because they have the areas with the highest rates in Wales doesn't mean that the local authorities of Cardiff and Gwynedd have uniformly high rates. The area with the lowest infection rate is also in Gwynedd with Abersoch & Aberdaron the only place in the country with an infection rate under 100 (85.1).

Cardiff also has an area with low rates, Cathays South and Bute Park, at 150.

Where does this data come from?

This is the latest Covid data published by Public Health Wales (PHW) which was released on Wednesday, November 17 (though it runs up to November 12).

It provides the numbers for areas with an average of 7,000 people, called middle super output areas (MSOA). In practice this means there are statistics for areas like Canton in Cardiff, Morriston in Swansea, and Porth in Rhondda.
