The 'sensational' Newcastle United signing who was unlucky to miss out on World Cup call-up

Danny Murphy believes Dan Burn can feel hard done by for missing out on a World Cup call-up for England following his 'sensational' form for Newcastle United. The January signing has impressed at left-back and helped the Magpies register the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League so far.

Burn was considered an outside candidate to earn his first England call-up after Ben Chilwell was ruled out of the World Cup with a hamstring injury. Luke Shaw is the only recognised left-back in Gareth Southgate's squad, with Kieran Trippier likely to provide cover for the position.

Murphy was surprised to see just one 'natural' left-back named in England's 26-man squad, and cited Burn as a player who was unlucky to miss the cut. The BBC Sport pundit played alongside the Newcastle defender during his time at Fulham, and he admits he could not have foreseen his development into a full-back for a top-four side

He told Betway: "I suppose maybe in the left-back area – I know Trippier can play left-back – but you think with a 26-man squad he could have taken a natural left-back. Somebody like Dan Burn, who's been absolutely sensational at Newcastle. I was with Dan at Fulham when he was making his way in the game, and I certainly didn't anticipate him becoming a sophisticated, marauding left-back playing for a team in the top four, I have to be honest.

"Maybe Tyrick Mitchell, he's played for England before, so maybe he felt there was a chance when the Chilwell injury happened. But he obviously trusts Trippier in that position."
