The multi award–winning stage version of Kate Grenville’s novel The Secret River, adapted by Neil Armfield and Andrew Bovell, comes to Brisbane for the first time. Based on the history of Grenville’s ancestors who settled in the Hawkesbury region, the story was first staged for Sydney Theatre Company in 2013 and was made into an ABC television drama in 2015.
The story explores the conflict between William Thornhill, a convict brought to Australia for theft in London’s slums, and the Dharug people on whose land he tries to settle. Set in the early 1880s, it examines a crucial turning point in Australia’s history with brutality and honesty. Actors Nathanial Dean and Trevor Jamieson are joined by Shaka Cook, Nigali Lawford-Wolf, Madeleine Madden, Colin Moody and more.
