What is the Secret Life of Four Year Olds about?

The first episode sees technology introduced to the nursery as tablets, selfie sticks and robots swing by the place.

Little Arthur and Archie get the chance to make a new non-human friend, sharing some touching moments as they begin to bond with the expensive toy. They soon see past his plastic skin when it starts to play music for them, allowing them to dance. They’re having so much fun that they have a hard time saying goodbye.

Adorable trio Iris, Na'Shae and Kiera are given their own tablets with intriguing yet alarming consequences – they’re stunned into silence for 20 minutes. The girls are so absorbed that they even miss out on the chance for chocolate and treats.

Elsewhere in the documentary, the observers aim to look at friendships and how the infants navigate their own relationships. The show follows Iris and Na’shae as they have a fall-out, each storming off in a huff, while Max – who has spent a lot of time in hospital – has to find a way to form friendships.

What is the experiment hoping to study?

The series seeks to examine the impact technology – and growing up in a digital world – has on the youngest generation. The four-year-olds are very much in the midst of the classroom of the future – and there is a lot to learn.

When is it on?

Secret Life of 4 Year Old starts tonight at 8pm on Channel 4. There are four episodes, before the attention switches to 5 Year Olds.
