The secret fort in a Welsh cliff you can rent out with your friends

There's nothing quite like a getaway to somewhere where you are secluded from everyday life - but how about a Victorian fort embedded in a Welsh cliff, with stunning views out to the sea?

If you're a keen walker and visitor to Pembrokeshire, you may have come across the West Blockhouse on the tip of St Anne's Head, a decent walking distance from the village of Dale and stone's throw from the nearby lighthouse, which was up for sale a few years back.

If your staycations are all about hunting out somewhere a bit quirkier than your average cottage or caravan, then West Blockhouse could be for you.

The fort sleeps eight people and you can take your dog, too.

As well as amazing views across St George's Channel you'll be able to shelter from the wind within its fortified limestone walls, in its classicly designed accommodation - think, open fire, lots of wood panelling and the odd military portrait.

Not far from the blockhouse is a sheltered beach and the rest of stunning Pembrokeshire is a short drive.

The history of the West Blockhouse is quite interesting, so this could definitely be the perfect holiday let for a history buff.

Completed in 1857 it contained accommodation for a garrison of 34 men and one officer. The reason behind it being built was to have increased protection for the nearby ports at Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock.

It continued in use until after the Second World War, during which Pembroke Dock was bombarded by the Germans, and updated from time to time with new guns and new emplacements.

Back in 1969 it was bought by The Landmark Trust, who own and run it now, when it was in a terrible state thanks to vandals and some crude repair damage done in the mid-20th century.

It was reimagined thanks to a 1904 survey of the building and reclaimed wood from Liverpool docks was used to renew the flooring, a 19th-century gun mounting was repositioned and a new drawbridge was installed.

The West Blockhouse is available to rent via The Landmark Trust and you can find more out about it here.
