The secluded little gin den you need to discover

Tucked away in sleepy Heswall, there is a speakeasy specialising in all things gin - and you’ll really want to find it.

Husband and Wife duo Matt and Hannah Whitby launched the Blind Pig in April 2018 after an extensive process of searching for the perfect place.

The bar is styled to look just like a 1920s, Prohibition era speakeasy, with an antique till that is more than 110 years old.

Owner Matt Whitby said: “We wanted to create a bar that we wanted to visit really, we’ve spent a really long time building a collection of genuine antiques.

“We’ve got an antique till from 1908 that we use everyday, we’ve got an antique piano and gramophone too.”

The Blind Pig offers 106 different weird and wonderful gins, including those that change colour and even ones that taste just like Rhubarb and Custard.

Hannah and Matt have even collaborated with Tappers Gin Distillery in West Kirby to produce their very own honey-flavoured concoction, in homage to Heswall’s honey bee hives - and which Matt says pairs wonderfully with elderflower tonic.

The bar also stocks a range of other rate spirits and features a cocktail menu inspired by the illicit underground dens that were hidden away in Chicago during the Prohibition-era.

The bar is tucked away on Telegraph Road in Heswall and despite being open just 12 months has received five star reviews on TripAdvisor.

Matt said: “The bar has been really well received, much better than we ever anticipated.

“I’ve lived and worked in Heswall for a good few years now and we thought that perhaps there was something missing, something different or alternative.

“We wanted to give the people an additional choice”

Reviewers definitely agree too, labelling the bar  “a great little intimate bar”, “really quirky and cosy” and “a ‘must’ visit”.
