The search for a company to run a Leeds bike share scheme is back underway

Cyclists may soon be able to ride round the city centre on rented bikes.

That's the message from Leeds City Council, which says it is 'committed to following through its ambition' to launch a bike share scheme.

Chinese bike-sharing startup Ofo was set to run a scheme which provided 1,000 bikes in Leeds last year, but the company pulled out at the eleventh hour when it went bust.

The council's executive board is expected to approve a formal tender process at a meeting later today (Wednesday) so it can find a new company to run and fund the scheme.

The council has already held informal discussions with 11 operators and said it is looking for a 'reputable company' which has a quality product and the ability to 'develop and expand the scheme city-wide'.

A council report states: "The establishment of public bike share in the city has the potential to significantly boost the level of cycling with all the additional benefits that will bring.

"Leeds has a great opportunity to bring a modern, attractive and competitively priced transport option to residents, employees and visitors to the city, and at nil capital and operating cost to the council."
