The Seahawks could sign Paxton Lynch to the practice squad

The Seattle Seahawks had a hotly contested preseason battle between Geno Smith and Paxton Lynch to determine their backup quarterback this season.

Smith outplayed Lynch in the final few weeks of the preseason, and ultimately was awarded the job. The team released both Smith and Lynch however, but they were able to re-sign Smith once a roster spot cleared following the Jadeveon Clowney trade.

Meanwhile, Lynch has remained unsigned, and the Seahawks could potentially try to reunite with the former first round pick by signing him to their practice squad.

A report by Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times indicates that the Seahawks have interest in a reunion.

Lynch remains eligible for the practice squad, but because he has two seasons of accrued time the Seahawks can only have one other player with his amount of experience on the practice squad at the same time.

Additionally, Lynch may choose to pursue another opportunity, either as a No. 2 somewhere else or even in the CFL or the XFL. If he does, the Seahawks could bring back J.T. Barrett or even 2018 seventh round pick Alex McGough to serve as their practice squad QB.

There are certainly other options as well, but coach Pete Carroll will likely want someone who has at least some familiarity with the playbook, making McGough and Barrett the most likely candidates – if Lynch goes elsewhere.
