The Seahawks botched an awesome onside kick recovery thanks to a bad penalty

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2021 season couldn’t be more of a disaster.

The team struggled on Monday night in the eventual 17-15 loss to the Washington Football Team. But if you needed one more reason to pile on the Hawks, let’s look back at what was happening with 15 seconds left in the contest.

The Seahawks lined up for an onside kick, Jason Myers booted it … and it was recovered by Gavin Heslop. Maybe Seattle had a chance to kick a field goal?!

Except … no. The Seahawks were flagged for a penalty that appears to have been fairly avoidable — they had just one player between the hash marks before the kick, which is an illegal formation (the explanation is below):
