The Script's Newcastle gig being postponed wasn't Utilita Arena's decision

Utilita Arena have responded to disappointment from fans annoyed about The Script postponing their gig there at short notice by revealing the decision wasn't down to the venue.

Days after rock legends The Who pulled their UK tour, which included a show at the arena, the Irish band revealed late on Friday night that they'd be rescheduling their show there with just 24 hours to go.

Posting on their social media channels, the group responsible for huge hits like Hall Of Fame, Superheroes and The Man Who Can't Be Moved, posted: "Newcastle Update. Our show in Newcastle at the Utilita Arena tomorrow night (March 14th) has been rescheduled for Saturday July 18th. Tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled show. Thank you to  #TheScriptFamily  for your understanding."

The move comes after widespread reports that large gatherings in the UK will be banned to try and combat the rapid spread of coronavirus , with confirmed cases now at nearly 800 and hours after Utilita Arena issued their own coronavirus guidance.

James Arthur's concert at Utilita Arena DID go ahead as planned on Friday evening, leading to some disgruntled fans with tickets for The Script to hit out at the arena on Facebook for it being postponed at such short notice.

But responding to comments, they revealed it was out of their hands, saying: "Each artist make their own decision. We are closely monitoring the situation and following advice from the Department of Health and Social Care and Public Health England regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus)."

They added: "We gave notice at the most immediate opportunity/we shared the news immediately from the band."

Some Script fans were particularly annoyed that they'd already arrived in Newcastle from other parts of the country or had hotels booked that couldn't be refunded.
