The Scottish Rugby title call over Lanarkshire minnows that should worry Celtic fans

Last night, the domestic rugby season in Scotland was declared null and void.

The governing body in Scottish Rugby fell in line with their Irish, Welsh and Italian counterparts by scrapping the whole season meaning no promotions, no relegations - and no titles.

In Lanarkshire the National League One title was already taking pride of place in the Biggar Rugby Club trophy cabinet.

The Hartree Mill club won their league by a clear 19 points over Heriot's Blues last month which meant promotion to the Premiership.

At the beginning of March, they were handed the winner's gong celebrating back-to-back first place finishes.

The remainder of the campaign had been put on hold amid the coronavirus shut down but the West region side who now face the prospect of handing their hard-earned silverware back.

It marks a growing trend in deciding to abandon the league campaigns, with Rutherglen lad Luke Campbell suffering as his sides campaign in the English non-league was voided.

The FA south of the border made the move to throw out the Jersey Bulls season in the Combined Counties League Division One, despite defender Campbell and co boasting 27 wins from 27.

Promotion had already been secured, alongside countless air miles, for the Bulls side as they looked to climb the ladder.

Now, everything from the National League, National League North and National League South have been suspended indefintely.

So what does this mean for Scottish football?

Brora Rangers have been awarded the Highland League title, but who they will play in the promotion play-off remains undecided.

Have Scottish Rugby now set a precedent that could rock the Premiership title race and Celtic?

With the Hoops 13 points clear will the SFA and SPFL follow in the footsteps of Scottish Rugby and scrap the end of season medals?

With Dundee United and Cove Rangers also holding healthy leads in the lower leagues it would be a body blow for several clubs throughout the country if the season - and promotion - was thrown out.
