The Scottish International Storytelling Festival is returning to Edinburgh

The Scottish International Storytelling Festival is returning for yet another year to Edinburgh, bringing with it old Scottish oral traditions, a wide array of cultures and different storytelling styles.

If a story is told well and in a certain way, it can evoke images into the mind of the person who is listening, allowing visitors to the festival a chance to enjoy incredible tales, music and characters that bring old and new cultures together.

The festival began back in 1989 and grows more in popularity each year, with more people wanting to get involved and engaged with storytelling. The festival is celebrating its 31 st year in action.

Running from October 19 to 31, this year’s event is named ‘Beyond Words’, as the festival hopes to explore through the mediums of music, dance and stories how experiences shared with others can feel like they are simply ‘Beyond Words’.

The programme suits all, whether you just want to listen or take part, offering up a range of diverse events which suit those completely new to storytelling and those who want to develop the craft of telling a good story.

The festival showcases over 80 storytellers from across the globe, with performances taking place in Edinburgh and around Scotland.

The event is also spread right across the city, with the main venue being the Netherbow Theatre at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in the heart of the Old Town, with other venues in the city also playing host to the festival such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, the National Library of Scotland and Museum & Galleries Edinburgh.

The festival is an inviting community gathering of tales, music, dancing and culture.
