London 12 May 2016: The Scott Trust, shareholder of the Guardian Media Group, is pleased to announce the appointment of Nils Pratley as journalist director to the board.
A Guardian journalist for over 13 years and currently its financial editor, Pratley’s appointment as journalists’ representative was agreed by The Scott Trust board following his selection as the NUJ’s preferred candidate in an indicative ballot of Guardian and Observer NUJ members.
Nils Pratley said: “It is a privilege to represent the Guardian and Observer journalists on the board of The Scott Trust. I look forward to the challenge as the Trust works to uphold our editorial traditions through these testing times for all media companies.”
Dame Liz Forgan, chair of The Scott Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome Nils to The Scott Trust board. He has extensive experience as a journalist as well as in depth knowledge across the business and financial sectors and I am confident that he will be an asset to both the Trust and the journalists he is representing.”
Pratley’s appointment follows Heather Stewart’s departure from the Board in March 2016 to become the Guardian’s joint political editor.

About The Scott Trust Ltd
The ultimate owner of the Guardian is The Scott Trust, which was originally created as a trust in 1936 to safeguard the title’s journalistic freedom. In 2008 it was replaced by a limited company with the same core purpose of the original trust: to secure the financial and editorial independence of the Guardian in perpetuity, while its subsidiary aims are to champion its principles and to promote freedom of the press in the UK and elsewhere. Other than to cover expense, The Scott Trust takes no dividend from the Group’s businesses, whose profits are instead reinvested to sustain journalism that is free from commercial or political interference.
The Trust Board is chaired by Dame Liz Forgan and currently consists of executives within GMG, external members, a member of the Scott family and a member of Guardian News & Media’s editorial staff.
