The Scott Brown problem that has Celtic facing an anxious wait

Scott Brown is battling to play through the pain of a broken toe as he bids to lead Celtic to a treble Treble.

Record Sport can reveal the eight-in-a-row skipper visited a Glasgow hospital yesterday for a scan on the injury which could keep him on the sidelines this weekend when the champions celebrate their latest title at home to Hearts.

Celtic’s medical team now face an anxious wait before discovering the full extent of the damage - with Brown desperate to lead his team mates out at Hampden to face the Jambos in the Scottish Cup Final next Saturday when he hopes to make another piece of history.

It’s understood the veteran has been experiencing serious discomfort for a fortnight after initially picking up the injury during the 3-0 win at Pittodrie - the result which carried Neil Lennon’s side over the finishing line.

But although he declared himself fit to face Rangers last week, doctors now believe that he has in fact suffered a fracture.

A source said: “Broonie didn’t even realised he was playing with a broken toe but that’s typical of the guy.

"Now it’s just about waiting to see the results of the scan to determine the extent of the damage.

“There’s obviously a fear that he could be out of the cup final but knowing him, he won’t let a wee thing like a broken toe stop him from playing at Hampden. You’re talking about a man from Fife here!”

Lennon is set to rest a number of other big name casualties on Sunday as Celtic’s treatment room works around the clock.

Record Sport revealed earlier this week that Odsonne Edouard suffered ankle damage at Ibrox and Lennon confirmed yesterday the Frenchman will play no part in this weekend’s action.

Mikael Lustig, Kieran Tierney, James Forrest and Jonny Hayes will also miss out.
