The scene of devastation this morning after suspected house explosion in Bury leaves two people in hospital

Devastating pictures show what's left of a house in Bury after reports of an explosion last night, which has left one person dead.

A major emergency service response was prompted on East View in Summerseat at around 9.20pm on Wednesday night.

Local residents reported hearing a 'loud bang,' before the swift arrival of emergency services.

The Manchester Evening News understands one person has died in the incident.

One woman and a younger female were taken to hospital following the suspected blast.

The extent of their injuries has not been confirmed, but it understood neither of them were seriously injured.

Two more women were assessed by paramedics at the scene and are not thought to be seriously hurt.

Some residents had to be evacuated from the area to a nearby garden centre.

The electricity supply was cut off in some properties as a precaution.

A large police presence remained at the property on Thursday morning, with the road leading to East View blocked off by officers.

Cadent gas officials could be seen assessing the scene, with a strong smell of gas reported in the area.

Forensic officers were also spotted searching the area, with a forensic tent stationed nearby to the scene.

The only structure which seems to have remained is a small section of the roof.

Bricks can be seen crumbling away the properties on either side. Tiles also appear to have fallen from neighbouring roofs.

The cause of the incident has not yet been confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for more information.

The fire service confirmed the 'collapse of a property' but no further details were given.

People who live with the police cordon told the M.E.N they were still in shock following the incident.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said he hadn't been able to go to sleep yet as he'd been assisting police.

"It was a loud bang. I got as far as the water pump and emergency services were already on the scene," he said.

"I thought there was going to be another explosion and that's why we needed to evacuate," he continued.

"I was allowed through and started to clear every building up to the football pitch to get them down to the garden centre.

"We then got residents back to their own property once it was safe."

Electricity North West said engineers had restored supplies to 60 properties on Thursday morning.

Six properties were still without power due to 'the nature of the incident,' the energy supplier said.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire Service said: "We sent three fire engines and two Technical Response Units.

"We also got the search and rescue dogs from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

"Fire crews worked to extinguish some pockets of fire.

"Two casualties were taken to hospital by NWAS and another two were checked over at the scene.

"We are down to one fire engine this morning to put out any remaining pockets of fire."
