The scene in Cardiff for Welsh Varsity as thousands pack out pubs, McDonald's and sunbathe outside castle

Thousands of students have descended on the Welsh capital for Welsh Varsity 2019 -  the biggest student sporting event in Wales.

Around 15,000 students from Cardiff and Swansea University were expected in the city for this year's annual sporting contest, where 41 events were taking place over 30 sports.

Students have been arriving in the city centre throughout the day - those from Swansea dressed in green and Cardiff students donning red - cheering on their respective universities as both sides vie for the Varsity Shield.

Much to the delight of the students, Cardiff basked in spring sunshine and mild temperatures, while Cardiff's pubs were packed out ahead of the showpiece finale of the men's rugby grudge match at the Principality Stadium (7.05pm kick-off).

You can follow live updates from the match here (and find out who takes home the Varsity Shield and Cup).

Here's how Cardiff looked today as Welsh Varsity 2019 got under way.

Pubs were packed out

Watering holes in the city centre were particularly busy on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the rugby finale.

There were queues of students to get into the Prince of Wales, while the Queens Vaults on Westgate Street, a stone's throw from the Principality Stadium, looked particularly atmospheric as students from Swansea dropped by in large numbers.

Roads around the stadium, including Westgate Street will be shut between 6pm and 10pm.
