The savage reviews Americans have left after eating fish and chips in the UK

America's opinion on British fish and chips has been revealed from the good to the bad and the ugly.

The seaside treat is a must for tourists wanting to sample the local cuisine but has received mixed reviews from US foodies who are often baffled by the combo.

A string of online reviews described the battered delicacy as funky, soggy and frankly not as good as US copycats despite getting five star ratings from British diners.

Reviewer Jsscbly said he was left thoroughly disappointed after taking a visiting friend from America to Fishbone Grill in Birchington, Kent, which has an overall rating of 4.5.

He wrote on Tripadvisor: "I can't understand why this place has so many good reviews. The portion size is good and mushy peas ok. That's about it.

"Chips were not cooked properly. Fish was very greasy and the batter was thick and stodgy and tasted funky. Really disappointed and won't be back."

This is contrary to recent local reviews praising the chippy for its fresh and tasty food and excellent service.

TripAdvisor user 20TracyS was also unimpressed after taking US friends for fish and chips, this time venturing to the Michelin-starred Whitstable Oyster Company restaurant in Whitstable.

She said the £16.50 cod was overpriced and served with "soggy, greasy chips which, quite frankly, our local take-away chip shop makes a better job of."

American diner Jen B was also left unsatisfied at Castle Take-Away in Dover, reports Kent Live.

"We ate here recently as we were told this was the best in Dover. We paid for the Sea Bass at £6 but I agree with other reviews that it was good but the portion did seem small for the price.

"A bit greasy as well but it did taste good."

It was not all doom and gloom however, with some America reviewers bucking the trend.

RLCRobert described it as the "best ever fish-n-chips meal" which he sampled during a 12-day cruise around the British Isles.

"If you'd like a beer with your meal, simply walk half a block to the small corner market store, and by the time you return, your BEST EVER fish-n-chips meal will be ready for you," he penned.

"The staff is super friendly, the portions quite filling, and perfectly cooked with a light batter. You will not be disappointed."
