The Saudi Public Investment Fund statement which has delighted Newcastle United fans

Newcastle United's majority investors have congratulated the club for picking up their first victory of the season.

Eddie Howe recorded his first win in charge at the fourth attempt as the Magpies ground out a narrow triumph over Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

Callum Wilson scored the only goal of the game at St James' Park to move United off the bottom of the table and three points adrift of safety.

The closing stages of the contest inevitably proved to be a tense affair as Sean Dyche's side put the hosts under pressure with a number of long balls.

Jay Rodriguez's strike was ruled out for offside, and Newcastle's first clean sheet of the season was rewarded with maximum points.

It was a battling display at the end of a gruelling week as Howe and part owners Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben praised the team and the home crowd for their support.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) has since taken to social media to commend the Magpies for picking up their first win of the post-Mike Ashley era.

Accompanied by a dressing room photo, the PIF's English account posted on Sunday afternoon: " #PIF congratulates @NUFC on the club’s first @premierleague win of the season. #NUFC."

It was a post which was quickly picked upon by Magpies supporters, many of whom were quick to return the praise to the consortium's majority backers.

Here is how Newcastle United fans reacted to the congratulatory message from the PIF.

'Finally have hope'

' Greatest owners'

'Just beautiful'

'Love you for sticking with us'

'Sorry for the state of the club'

'Thank you for believing'

'We congratulate you'
