The Salford Western Gateway Bridge is stuck open

The Salford Western Gateway Lift bridge is currently stuck in the open position.

Drivers are being told to divert using Liverpool Road and the M60 .

The bridge, located off the M60 near Barton Bridge , opened for traffic passing on the canal but has become stuck in the open position.

There are reports of queuing traffic in the area as a result.

The bridge opened in 2017 as part of the expansion of the A57 relief road.

It connects the Salford side of the Manchester Ship Canal to Trafford and was built to ease congestion.

When the bridge was being constructed in 2017 a huge platform collapsed and its opening delayed.

The load - weighing around 500 tonnes - crashed around 60ft to the ground from atop four concrete pillars.

It is unknown when the bridge will be open.

A tweet from Transport for Greater Manchester said: "Travel update: Salford Western Gateway bridge is currently stuck in the open position. Please find alternative route."
