The Salford roads where potholes will be filled using a £1.2m fund

Potholes are set to be filled across Salford as £1.2m of spending is signed off.

A list of streets in the city which will benefit from the Pothole Action Fund was revealed earlier this week and has now been approved by the local authority.

A total of 18 roads, including the A580 and A6, have been identified as the top priorities for this pot of funding – and work on one street is already complete.

Around 70 more streets have been listed in a report as 'reserve schemes'.

Greater Manchester received £15,526,000 from the Department for Transport of which £1,286,345 has been allocated to Salford council.

Roads in need of repair were identified by highways inspectors and some were reported by members of the public, neighbourhood managers and councillors.

The full list was approved by deputy mayor John Merry on Monday (August 9).

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Labour councillor Mike McCusker said: "Our highways repair budget covers all reactive repairs such as fixing kerbs, bollards and guard rails as well as defects on the roads, cycleways and footpaths.

"We are endeavouring to use and encourage the use of more recycled materials in the products we use and try to reduce transport of materials and carbon emissions by using more local suppliers where we can.

"More schemes are put forward each year than budget availability, so some, inevitably, have to be postponed or rescheduled to future works programmes.

"Our latest report shows that our 10-year programme of investment has paid off and only 8.2 pc of our highways are in critical condition compared to the national average of 10 pc, only 37.6 pc of our roads will need maintenance soon compared to 72.6 pc nationally and more than half our roads - 54.2 pc - are in good overall condition compared to 17.4 pc nationally."

The 'primary schemes' identified for the Pothole Action Fund are:

  • A580 (East Lancashire Rd), Worsley & Westwood Park, Swinton Park and Claremont
  • A6 (Broad Street), Claremont
  • Douglas Green, Pendleton & Charlestown
  • Castlewood Road, Kersal & Broughton Park
  • Bury New Road, Kersal & Broughton Park
  • Park Road, Eccles
  • Weymouth Road, Barton & Winton
  • Wentworth Avenue, Weaste & Seedley
  • Moss Meadow Road, Claremont
  • Lord Street, Cadishead & Lower Irlam
  • Ridyard Street, Little Hulton
  • Ashtonfield Drive, Walkden North
  • Lower Seedley Road, Weaste & Seedley (already complete)
  • Agecroft Road, Pendlebury & Clifton
  • Station Road, Pendlebury & Clifton
  • Brentwood Road, Worsley & Westwood Park
  • Worsley Road, Worsley & Westwood Park
  • Astley Road, Cadishead & Lower Irlam

A list of reserve schemes has also been approved, but the cost of completing work on these streets would cost more than the allocated budget allows for.
