The Salford kindhearts sewing scrubs for our NHS heroes - they need your help

A group of Salford kindhearts has dedicated hundreds of hours to helping our NHS heroes.

The Salford Scrubees have stitched 1,000 sets of scrubs for Salford Royal Hospital staff.

Now they're calling for extra support.

Members have been asked to help out workers at care homes, GPs and pharmacies.

The group, made up of more than 80 volunteers and 20 professionals, makes caps and scrubs from recycled matieral.

It needs cash for equipment, deliveries and admin support - to help more frontline workers.

Veterinary nurse Bethany Scott volunteers for the group. She organised the srubs deliverty to Salford Royal.

She said: “I’ve been contacted by GP surgeries, care homes and pharmacies also looking for additional PPE and I’ve had to turn them down.

“With more funding, sewers, delivery drivers and admin support, we could support more of those asking to help.”

Rachelle Cleary, resident artist at the Hamilton Davies Trust, is working with the Salford Scrubees with her network of trusted volunteers. Many of her contacts are elderly, so are self-isolating for long periods, able to get stuck into the mountain of work.

She has been working with 20 of the volunteers - all incredibly fast sewers.

Rachelle said: “It’s making everyone involved feel purposeful, and, in some cases, helping them through emotionally.

"Some of my ladies are isolated from family, grandchildren and friends - this is giving them something to do."

Rachelle has been isolating with her son and his girlfriend while looking after a vulnerable family member. She found out about the group when a post by Bethany calling for fabric donations popped up on her feed.

She said: "I haven’t worked for a month while I’m doing this.

"I keep saying I need to go back to work - I’ll have to earn some money soon, but it’s hard to stop when you know there’s a need."

The group has received some funding from the Hamilton Davies Trust and been supported with fabric cutting, pattern printing and sewing by local businesses and charities such as the Irlam Rotary Club, Rachel Robinson Interiors, Nettl Deansgate and NOV Process and Flow Tech.

You can donate to the group via their fundraising page.

Or follow them on their Facebook page here.

Residents outside of Salford looking to help can join the Manchester and East Lancs Scrub Hub Facebook group.
