The safe-words Hollywood actresses use when filming sex scenes

Hollywood actresses have taken to using safe words when filming sex scenes to let fellow actors and crew know when they need to take a break.

A British actress based in LA has revealed some of the common words actors will use when they want filming to stop.

The words, which won't be in the script, instantly diffuse what could be an awkward situation and let everyone know it's time to step back.

The actess revealed that filming sex scenes is often awkward and intense with scenes filmed multiple times, from multiple angles, while the cast are wearing very little and are surrounded by crew.

She said the safe words are becoming increasingly common, reports The Mirror .

Some sets will employ intamacy coordinators - known as ICs - to make sure everything is going as it should, reports The Telegraph .

The unname actress said "Loads more directors are using ICs, but not all, which is why a lot of us have started using 'safe words' to stop filming if a scene's getting too heated. Some even have them written into their contracts."

Popular examples are "pineapple", "sweet potato" and "mayonnaise".

She said: "It's about using an everyday word to deflate a high-pressure situation."
