The sad images as Debenhams says farewell to Wales after decades in our towns and cities

Debenhams is saying farewell to Wales in a sad end for the once giant of the high street.

Online fashion retailer Boohoo bought the troubled Debenhams brand and website out of administration for £55 million earlier this year

But it did not want the bricks and mortar portfolio - condemning 118 stores to closure.

This included eight stores in Wales in Bangor, Cardiff, Carmarthen, Llandudno, Llanelli, Newport, Swansea and Wrexham.

Six stores have already shut up shop with Bangor in North Wales among those shutting yesterday.

Stores in Cardiff and Swansea will close their doors for the final time on Saturday, May 15 - although by then there may be very little stock left.

Images have emerged in recent days showing the final shoppers grabbing any last-minute bargains they can find - including these from the Friars Walk store in Newport.

They reveal the sad sight of empty floor spaces that were once full with row upon row of the latest consumer products and gifts.

Signs reading "everything must go" and showing 50% off and buy-one-get-one-free deals are hung around the store as the last customers pass through the doors before they are shuttered for good.

Nigel Roberts, from Llandudno, reflected on the devastating blow it will have on those affected, many of whom will have worked for decades in the stores.

He said: "I feel sorry for the staff.

"So many people discount the human cost of stores closing, many have such a tight team who turn out like family in the end.

"Change is inevitable but some change is completely unexpected."

The challenge will now be filling the sites left at a time when most national retailers are cutting back or consolidating their portfolios.

One positive in the sector has been the resilience of independents and in Llandudno there are several new ventures launching in the town centre.

The hospitality sector is also expected to boom with a current challenge finding enough staff to prepare for full reopening later this month.
