The sad, abandoned pub in Radford that spent 10 years empty and is now set for new beginning

The demolition of a Nottingham pub that had fallen into a state of disrepair has been welcomed by residents.

The Local on Alfreton Road will be demolished in order to prepare for its premises to be transformed into a mixed commercial and residential development.

Originally built in the 1960s by Shipstones Brewery when it was known as The Windmill, it has under gone several name changes but has been vacant for the last ten years.

People in the area near the pub were happy that the derelict building will be demolished.

Dean Finalayson , 39, who is currently out of work and lives in Radford, said: "It looks an awful mess at the minute, it's a right state after being shut years ago.

"I reckon that there would probably be squatters in there too, so it's probably worse for the area to leave it there. It definitely needs knocking down.

"I'm pleased to hear there are at least plans to do something with it, it's a big building.

"Whatever replaces it, shops or even apartments would be good, make the place a bit nicer to look at."

A viability report by ale campaigners CAMRA found that the site had no credible future as a pub due to to the The Local’s location, its physical size and the money required to restore the dilapidated building.

Sally Camara, 18, a student at Nottingham Trent University, said: "I've only just moved to the area and to be honest I hadn't even noticed it was an old pub - just thought it was a big derelict house.

"It's a shame and kind of sad that it closed whenever it did because I think there used to be quite a few pubs down here but there's loads of closed up pubs everywhere you go.

"But it looks pretty bad facing out onto the street with it all faded, the sign is the only reason I noticed."

A planning application was submitted in March 2020 for the demolition of the public house and the construction of 17 apartments but this application has not been determined and the site is now under new ownership.

Alice Thurton, 23, who works in retail and lives in Radford: "It's been gone for ages but we could have done with another pub down here.

"But if it would cost too much to make it work as a pub then there's nothing really that can be done.

"Don't think we need any more retail or apartments down here though."

Permission was given by Nottingham City Council on November 18 to demolish the building.
