The fictional series, based on a teleplay from Outer Banks cocreator Jonas Pate and David Wilcox, follows the real band of the same name, consisting of William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock, and Jesse Golliher.

The Runarounds band was formed in 2021 after responding to a casting call by Pate for musicians to appear on Outer Banks. Following their debut on the show, Pate began developing a pilot for a series focused on The Runarounds, which was filmed in 2022.
Despite their origins on Outer Banks, The Runarounds is poised to stand as an independent entity. The show will be set and filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, with creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke serving as executive producers.
