The rules shoppers must follow as Sunderland's Bridges shopping centre announces plans to reopen

Sunderland's leading shopping centre will reopen next week as the country leaves the latest stage of lockdown.

The Bridges will reopen non-essential retailers at 9am on Monday, April 12 after a three-month closure.

Stores will stay open until 5.30pm except Thursday's when opening times will be extended until 8pm for late night shopping, when free parking is available from 5.30pm.

The shopping centre has remained open throughout lockdown, but many of its high street retailers were forced to close in early January in line with Government guidelines.

Popular brands including Primark, H&M, Lush, The Fragrance Shop, Footasylum, Next, Hotel Chocolat and Waterstones will open their doors for the first time in months.

The Bridges said social distancing measures will be in place to encourage safe shopping, with a one-way system, enhanced cleaning and hand sanitiser stations.

Shoppers must wear face coverings throughout the centre unless they are exempt.

The centre's director, Karen Eve, said she is delighted to welcome shoppers back.

“It’s great news that many of our centre retailers can reopen next week and it is hopefully a sign that we are one step closer to getting back to normal,” said Karen.

“The safety of our staff and customers is a top priority at the Bridges and we’ve taken extra steps, such as increased cleaning, to help shoppers feel comfortable during their visit.

“We are lucky to have a diverse range of retailers in the centre, selling everything from clothes to homeware and books to skincare, so we hope Sunderland shoppers will support them in the coming weeks.”
