The rules on wearing helmets while riding Nottingham's e-scooters

The distinctive yellow e-scooters have been seen whipping through the streets of Nottingham as part of a trial to look into their wider use across the country.

The Wind e-scooters have now been used over half a million times since the trial was rolled out in partnership with Nottingham City Council last October with 600 scooters available.

But some riders have found that while some have integrated helmets, others don't leaving would-be riders scratching their heads on the rules.

The current guidance from The Government is that you should be wearing a helmet while on an e-scooter however the safety gear is not currently a legal requirement.

Gov.uk states: "You should wear a cycle helmet when using an e-scooter. Helmets are recommended but are not a legal requirement.

"Make sure that your cycle helmet conforms to current regulations, is the correct size and is securely fastened.

"Wear light-coloured or fluorescent clothing so that other road users can see you in daylight, poor light and in the dark."

Wind itself encourages riders to wear a helmet while out-and-about and launched the integrated helmets in Bordeaux last year ahead of its UK release.

To use the integrated helmets, users have to scan and unlock the scooter using the app and then select the "unlock helmet" option.

In a blog post, Wind said: "Our custom-built Wind 3.0 e-scooter is already leading the industry when it comes to safety and reliability.

"The integrated helmet that we now roll out in Bordeaux is another milestone in creating the safest e-scooter out there.

"It’s another addition to a wide range of safety features of our scooter such as double handbrakes, electric front and rear brakes, a wide non-slip platform, or larger and wider foam tyres that cannot burst."
