The rules on meeting people in your garden when the lockdown eases next week

Lockdown rules across Greater Manchester are set to ease next week, with some businesses allowed to reopen.

But, there will be no change to the restrictions on meeting people from another household, whether in your home or in your garden.

It means that residents in nearly every borough of the region are prohibited from meeting anyone who does not live in their home or is not part of their support bubble.

This includes meetings at your house in the garden or at indoor public venues, including the ones set to reopen next week, such as leisure centres, casinos and bowling alleys.

The only exceptions are in Wigan and Stockport, which have both been removed from the Greater Manchester lockdown in the last few weeks because of low infection rates.

In those two areas you can meet people from one other household at any one time in either your home, in the garden or in a public place.

It comes as rules across the region are set to be eased from midnight on Tuesday, September 8, to bring most of the area in line with the rest of the country.

Announcing these changed, Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: “I’m very glad we’ve been able to make this change, working with local councils, because local lockdowns are working to control the virus.

"We are seeing improvements in the rates of infection thanks to the huge efforts made by local communities and authorities working alongside our effective Test and Trace system.

“We must stay alert and I continue to encourage everyone to play their part by following local rules, self-isolating and requesting a free test as soon as they get any symptoms.”
