The rules Irish people might be forgetting when shopping in Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Supervalu, Dunnes and more

As Ireland moves closer to the "new normal", people are being reminded to keep practicing all the social distancing guidelines.

Supermarkets have remained open since the beginning of the pandemic which may be leading people to become more relaxed when it comes to shopping there.

However it is important that everyone continues to respect the places have laid out for the safety of all shoppers.

These are the main rules in all Irish supermarkets at the moment in case you need a reminder;

Rules in Irish supermarkets

Tesco

     
  • There are sanitising stations available at store entrances while all stores are cleaned regularly.
  • Staff members are taking regular breaks to wash their hands thoroughly,

  • The shops have a "one trolley one person" rule in store but use a "common sense approach" when it isn't possible.

  • The company have installed queue-management technology at store entrances. The technology indicates the number of people in store at any one time, highlighting when it is safe to enter with directional arrows permitting entry, or a stop sign if customers need to wait.

Aldi

  • Clear markings to show the 2m distance customers must maintain when queuing at checkouts.
  • A phased entry system that is strictly managed.
  • Clear markers show the space customers must maintain when queuing to enter stores.
  • Clear protective screens at every till.
  • A self-service cleaning station upon entry to stores for cleaning both trolleys and baskets.
  • Hand sanitiser for customers at the entrance to stores.
  • Hand sanitiser, gloves and facemasks are available for our colleagues in store and in the warehouse.

Lidl

  • A new queue management system in stores across Ireland. This automated system is designed to control the number of customers entering and exiting the store at any one time with easy-to-see traffic light signals. 

  • Plexiglass screens at the till area.

  • New signage showing how to social distance from fellow shoppers.

  • Mobile hand sanitisers for customer use. 

  • Increased security presence.

Dunnes

  • Store teams wash their hands every 30 minutes and follow good cough etiquette and respiratory hygiene.
  • Significantly increased cleaning and sanitation programme in all stores, including for trollies, checkouts and baskets.
  • Each store has a “cleaning station” where customers can avail of anti-bacterial spray to wipe down their own trollies or basket handles if they so wish.
  • A substantial quantity of gloves and masks for staff to wear, and also gloves for customers are mad available.
  • A comprehensive social distancing programme has been rolled out in all stores.

Supervalu

  • Sanitise your hands when entering. 
  • At busy times stores will need to limit the number of people entering the store.
  • Buy what you need, staff are re-stocking everyday.
  • Use contactless or card payments where possible – Contactless threshold has been raised to €50.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow.
