The rules for visiting pubs and restaurants in Tier 3 lockdown

Greater Manchester has been moved into Tier 3 restrictions which means more changes to the way we live our lives.

The region is now classed as 'very high risk' in the new system unveiled by the Prime Minister earlier this month.

The region joins the Liverpool City Region and Lancashire in the strictest measures in a bid to curb rising coronavirus infection rates.

Tier 3 enforces a ban on household mixing in most settings - something which millions living in Greater Manchester have lived with already since July.

The rule means that you cannot meet with people outside of your household indoors or outdoors - including private gardens, beer gardens and restaurant terraces - unless you're in a support bubble.

You may, however, continue to see friends and family you do not live with (or have formed a support bubble with) in certain outdoor public spaces, such as:

  • Parks, beaches, countryside, forests
  • Public gardens (whether or not you pay to enter them), allotments
  • Outdoor sports courts and facilities, and playgrounds

The rule of six and social distancing must continue to be obeyed.

But what about pubs, bars and restaurants?

In Tier 3, all pubs and bars that don't serve food must close but restaurants can stay open.

Pubs and bars can only remain open if they serve 'substantial meals. The government says a substantial meal is 'a main lunchtime or evening meal, and they may only serve alcohol as part of such a meal'.

But no one must mix indoors or in most public outdoor venues with anyone who they do not live with.

So, that means you cannot go out for a meal with up to five friends if they are all from different households.

The national restrictions such as the 10pm curfew also remain in place.
