The rules around tinted windows and windscreens you should know about after a Welsh driver is pulled over

Did you know that if your windscreen or front side windows are tinted too much you can receive a court summons? The law states that 75% of visible light must be able to pass through front windscreens & 70% through front side windows.

One driver from Tonypandy has been caught red handed by South Wales police for only allowing 14% of visible light through their side windows. So what are the rules around tinted windows and windscreens you should know about? We've compiled a list of everything you need to know.

According to Gov.UK, the rules for tinted front windscreens and front side windows depend on when the vehicle was first used but there are no rules for tinting the rear windscreen or rear passenger windows.

It’s illegal to fit or sell glass or a vehicle already fitted with glass that breaks the rules on tinted windows and the police or the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) vehicle examiners use light measuring equipment to measure window tint.

What happens if my windscreen or front side windows are tinted too much?

  • You could get a ‘prohibition notice’ stopping you using your vehicle on the road until you have the extra tint removed
  • Or a penalty notice or court summons
