The rule changes for visiting Wales which come in tomorrow

Strict measures to reduce the spread of coronavirus in Wales will be eased tomorrow (Monday), as confirmed by First Minister Mark Drakeford on Friday.

The Welsh government currently has a 'stay local' rule as part of its lockdown, with residents advised to stay within five miles of their homes as a guide.

However, this travel restriction is due to be lifted from next week, with Mr Drakeford advising people they can "travel as far as they like for all purposes".

Two households will also be able to join for the first time from Monday in one 'bubble', of any size, and they will be able to spend time together as if they are part of one household.

People will not be able to be part of more than one bubble, however.

The different approaches to lockdown at either side of the Severn crossings has been significant, with England relaxing restrictions far sooner and now allowing the hospitality industry to reopen.

People from England have been unable to travel across the border due to the 'stay local' rule once on the other side.

However, the change coming into force tomorrow means that this no longer applies - people travelling from Bristol and other parts of England will be able to visit Wales, and vice versa.

There were concerns that Welsh people would be tempted to break the stay local rule to visit English pubs this weekend.

In a press conference on Friday, Mr Drakeford was asked what he would say to those in Wales who were considering travelling to England over the weekend to visit a pub.

He said: "While there are populations very close to the border who may choose to travel, for most of us that will not be a possibility.

“Please, wherever you are in Wales, this weekend is not a reason or an excuse to abandon all the things that you have worked so hard to achieve.

“Please continue to do those things and help to keep Wales safe.”

Bars, pubs, cafés and restaurants can begin to re-open outdoors in Wales from July 13, but only if coronavirus cases continue to fall.
