The Rugby World Cup 7am headlines as significant details emerge on Rob Howley's bombshell exit

Welcome to day three of our Rugby World Cup coverage.

It's been an explosive 24 hours and we are here live to keep you updated from the Wales camp and beyond .

If you're just waking up, here are the main headlines this morning after Wales held a press conference from their base in Japan earlier this morning in the wake of the Rob Howley scandal.

Rob Howley latest

It's emerged the WRU were first contacted by a betting company's integrity team last Wednesday with information about coach Rob Howley's alleged breach of betting regulations.

Addressing the world's media today, WRU chief executive Martyn Phillips said World Rugby were informed over the weekend after further details emerged on Friday, and the decision to send the Howley home made after a series of meetings on Monday.

As replacement Stephen Jones prepares to arrive in Japan on Thursday, rugby chief Phillips said support was now being put around Howley, who remains "very co-operative."

Phillips didn't offer any timescale for the investigation but said he would not put on pressure for it "to be done quickly", preferring for it to be done "right".

Gatland's shock

Speaking publicly for the first time since the news, Warren Gatland has described his "shock" at the situation - admitting he's had "better birthdays" than yesterday.

The head coach was informed of the development on Monday, but said his focus must remain on preparing the squad and making the transition ahead as "seamless" as possible.

The Kiwi added that Jones, who has worked or played with two thirds of the squad, will bring his own personality and ideas to the table.

Gatland also praised players for stepping up in the last 24 hours and showing resilience in a difficult situation.

Players' disappointment

Jonathan Davies and Dan Biggar also took part in the press conference (Ben Evans/Huw Evans Agency)

Taking to the stage, Dan Biggar admitted players have been "obviously disappointed" by the news, stressing: "All players like me and Jon (Davies) have ever had is Rob."

The Wales star also reassured journalists that their approach will remain for the same for Wales' first match against Georgia - and that training has not differed dramatically from a week in the Vale.

He said: "It’s not the ideal situation but we’ve rolled our sleeves up and got on with it. We still have to deliver on Monday night. What we’ve had in place stays the same for Monday night."
