The Royal family dress code as fans ask why Prince George didn't wear a jersey at Euro 2020 final

The outfits that are worn by the Royal family fascinate many people and on Sunday night fans asked why Prince George didn't wear a jersey at Euro 2020 final.

Fans of the royals will have noticed that they have never seen Prince George in a Spiderman T-shirt or Catherine in a tracksuit.

George wore a formal suit and tie, matching his dad. Meanwhile his mum Kate wore black trousers and a white blazer.

There are rules governing what members of the Royal Family should wear to public engagements from gloves, to military uniforms, and skirts instead of jeans.

We reveal here the dress code that royals aim to follow.

Why does Prince George wear shorts?

Prince George hasn't been seen wearing a T-shirt of his favourite TV character or even a pair of trousers.

Experts say this is because it is royal tradition for young princes and princesses to be formally dressed when they are in public.

After England scored their goal inside just two minutes, the youngster was caught on camera giving his mother and his dad Prince William a big hug in a rarely seen display of affection - delighting royal watchers.

Why does the Queen wear gloves?

Gloves were seen as a fashion item but also had a practical function - helping to stop germs from being spread from person to person.

The Queen would have shaken hands with hundreds of people every year.

They serve as a fashion statement as well as protecting her from bacteria.

Keeping it casual

There is still a dress code to be followed when dressing casually and being seen in public.

For women, a smart day dress or trousers along with a jacket or cardigan is acceptable.

For men, it is a blazer with a collared shirt and chinos.

Prince William and Kate generally follow these traditional rules but sometimes let it slip on a dress-down day by wearing jeans.

Fans of the Royal Family will have noticed that the Queen's wardrobe includes all the colours of the rainbow.

She is reported to have once said: "If I wore beige, nobody would know who I am."

Military uniform

Prince William and Prince Harry both served in the armed forces.

They were pictured many times wearing military uniforms.

The royals often wear uniforms when they represent regiments at occasions that are military affairs.

You must not take your coat off in public

Royals are not supposed to take off their outer layers off in public, especially coats.

According to OK! magazine, royal tradition states that if a female member of the royal family was to remove her coat in public it would be deemed "unladylike."

If wearing an overcoat, male members of the royal family are also encouraged to keep this on until in private.

They must always bring a black outfit when travelling

Royal members do a lot of travelling - and with that comes a lot of luggage

Amongst staple pieces in their travel wardrobe, they are - rather grimly - required to always carry a black outfit.

This is to ensure they look suitably dressed should someone, such as a dignitary, politician, or even fellow royal family member, for example, die unexpectedly.

Male members cannot wear shorts after eight years old

While male children in the family will rarely be seen out of a pair of shorts, it is customary for them to be worn until only eight years of age.

After this age, boys are permitted to wear full-length trousers.

Female members of the royal family are also never allowed to be pictured at formal or public engagements in a pair of shorts.

Tiaras are for after 6pm

Tiaras are reserved for formal occasions and evening events in the royal family.

A staple for any royal bride, Marie Claire previously reported that a tiara or crown cannot be worn before 6pm because diamond headwear is considered "formal attire".
