The Ross Wilson 'barrier' as Rangers look to get director of football talks over the finish line

Rangers will need the 'blessing' of Southampton owner Gao Jisheng if they are to bring Ross Wilson to the club as their new director of football.

The Daily Record exclusively revealed the Ibrox side were in advanced talks with the Southampton talent spotter to replace Mark Allen .

Wilson is edging towards accepting the post with the Light Blues after a personal plea from boss Steven Gerrard.

But before he does so Rangers will need to get the go ahead from St Mary's chief Jisheng, according to the Sunday Post .

The 36-year-old previously turned down an approach from Rangers to stay in England's top flight.

However, this time the former Falkirk, Huddersfield and Watford recruitment guru is keen to seal his switch to Ibrox.

Wilson spoke out about the difficult decision to reject the move back in 2018.

He said: "It was one of the most difficult decisions of my career not to take that job at that particular time

"It is a club which has so much history, such high standards and such an attraction to it, because of the size of opportunity which a club like that presents you with.

"There are a lot of people inside Rangers who I would consider friends of mine, who I keep in touch with and keep on top of how things are going."
