The Romelu Lukaku transfer gamble that could put Manchester United in the money - latest rumours

Manchester United could bet set for a transfer windfall with reports in Italy suggesting Inter are ready to roll the dice on Romelu Lukaku.

The Serie A giants are desperate to make a signing splash and Antonio Conte has pinpointed the Belgian marksmen as his No.1 summer target.

United are looking to recoup the £75million they paid Everton for the forward two years ago as Inter look to put a package together to tempt the United hierarchy.

Reports on Tuesday suggested the San Siro side are considering either a lucrative loan bid or a £60m deal with significant add-ons to try and get a deal over the line.

It was expected any agreement would hinge on the future of Mauro Icardi at Inter. Juventus have been linked with the Argentine and his potential exit would bankroll a move for Lukaku.

But Corriere dello Sport claim the Inter board are willing to take the plunge and finalise a deal for the 26-year-old before Icardi is off the wage bill. Spanish outlet AS believe the Nerazzurri could push the boat out to £72m to land the United marksmen.

Conte views the striker as the perfect No.9 in his system and was left crestfallen after he missed out on the player when he was Chelsea boss.

The Italian had to settle with Alvaro Morata but that move never worked out for either party and the Spain international sealed a permanent Stamford Bridge exit by joining Atletico last month.

It's understood United would be willing to do business if the right financial package is on the table.

Meanwhile, United also face a battle to convince Paul Pogba to remain at Old Trafford. The wantaway Frenchman has made public his desires to leave the Premier League.

Juventus and Real Madrid have been heavily linked with a move for the World Cup winner but a bid has yet to materialise.
