The role Newcastle United fans played in the win against Bournemouth

Eddie Howe believed Bournemouth unwittingly got Newcastle United fans into the game by making some 'uncharacteristic mistakes with the ball' during his side's 2-1 defeat at St James' Park.

The Cherries took the lead through Harry Wilson on 14 minutes following a well-worked set-piece and the Magpies initially found it difficult to break the visitors down as they looked to get back into the game.

Howe's side quickly settled into their passing rhythm but Steve Cook nearly let Newcastle in when Allan Saint-Maximin closed the Bournemouth captain down as he attempted to clear the ball before hitting the crossbar with a powerful effort.

That chance gave the crowd a huge lift and, just a few minutes later, DeAndre Yedlin headed the Magpies level after getting on the end of Saint-Maximin's cross-come-shot at the back post.

Ciaran Clark put Newcastle in front with a scuffed effort after the break and while Bournemouth had a glorious opportunity to equalise at the death, when Joshua King headed wide, Martin Dubravka had little to do in the second half.

Steve Bruce thought the crowd 'played their part' in the final 15 minutes of the game in particular and Howe admitted his side gave the home fans plenty of encouragement.

"I think we made some uncharacteristic mistakes with the ball at a time when we were dominating the game and when you give Newcastle transitions with the attacking players they have, the pace they have in the team, that's a dangerous thing to do," he told reporters after the game.

"I think from that point it just gave them confidence and got the crowd into the game. I think that's a huge frustration from our perspective because we were dominant from that opening spell of the half and really we should have been looking to try and get that second goal we maybe needed."
